Disability Sports Day

18th April 2008 08/86

Disability Sports Day

Children and adults with disabilities will have the chance to try out a variety of different sports during a special event in West Lancashire.

On Saturday 26th April people of all ages will have the opportunity to try out a range of physical activities on offer at a Disability Sports Day at Ormskirk’s Edge Hill University, St Helens Road.

The event has been organised by the West Lancashire Disability Sports Forum and supported by West Lancashire District Council to showcase the many leisure pastimes that people with disabilities can take up.

Throughout the day participants will able to try everything from dancing, trampolining, boccia, football and judo

Edge Hill will also be launching a new fitness initiative for disabled people to use the gym so visitors will also be able to try out the new equipment on the day.

The event is free and is aimed at teams and individuals and participants can book in advance or just turn up on the day.

David Tilleray, Executive Manager for Community Services, said:"The idea behind this unique event is to raise the profile of sports and recreation for people with disabilities and to show that anything is possible. I’d urge people to go along to find out just what fantastic sporting opportunities are available in West Lancashire for disabled children and adults to get involved in."

For more information about the event, please contact Michelle Hughes from the Council’s Sports Development Team on 01695 728905.

The West Lancashire Disability Sports Forum is a partnership involving West Lancashire District Council, Edge Hill College, Mencap, Spartac Gym Club and other interested individuals.

The Council supports the development of provision of sports for disabled youngsters and provides a number of multi-sports activities. There are a number of disability clubs across West Lancashire that provides weekly activities for 5 to 16 year olds.

In addition, the Council also organises activity trips and invites special guests to come along to teach children different skills and to give them the opportunity to join clubs.
