Wild chickens no longer ruffling any
feathers
West Lancashire Borough
Council joined forces with the police to help relocate a group of
nuisance neighbours in Banks.
Nearly 30 wild ‘feral’ chickens and cockerels
have been playing havoc with residents in Aveling Drive, Banks.
Following months of 5am wake-up calls from the
resident roosters, council rangers, pest control officers and
police wildlife officers worked together to move the chickens and
find them a more suitable home.
After roosting in trees and bushes across the entire estate, the
chickens were safely caught and subsequently whisked off to a much
better location in one of the local country parks.
Councillor Andrew Fowler, portfolio holder for
Health and Leisure, said: “Our officers along with colleagues from
the police did a fantastic job relocating the chickens to a
environment where they cannot cause any nuisance and can live a
happy life.
“Nobody is quite sure how the chickens
ended up in Banks but hopefully the residents of Aveling Drive are
now able to get a good nights sleep without the threat of a dawn
wake-up call from one of the cockerels.”
This was the second time the chickens have
been relocated. Last year, 40 wild chickens were
rounded up and moved to another location but a few were left
behind. Before long, they had multiplied and started causing
a nuisance again, and as a result residents decided to call in
help.
