Winter text alert service, 27 January 2012

27 January 2012, 2012/14

Council to send winter service text alerts

Residents and businesses in West Lancashire can now subscribe to a new text message alert service that will provide up-to-the-minute information about council services if they are affected by winter weather.

The new service, launched at the beginning of the year on a pilot basis by West Lancashire Borough Council, will run throughout the rest of the winter months to alert subscribers to changes to council services affected by adverse weather conditions.

It’s free to receive a message and it costs just one standard network message to sign up.

Signing up is quick and easy - simply text winter to 88882. Subscribers will be the first to know if there are any changes to services including refuse and recycling collections.

For more information on the text message alert service, along with information about council winter services and advice on preparing for bad weather, please visit the winter weather advice page.

Councillor Ian Grant, Leader of West Lancashire Borough Council said: “Whilst we have been lucky so far this year, the last couple of years have seen some of the worst winter weather in decades affecting residents, businesses and council services. The council reviewed its winter weather resilience arrangements and is taking proactive measures to ensure that it is fully prepared should bad weather arrive, even in January and February this year.

“The new text message alert service means that subscribers will receive important updates about affected borough council services straight to their mobile phones, as soon as they happen. We’ll also be keeping people informed via the website and twitter. I would encourage people to go online to find out more about winter services.”
