Image makeover for shopping precinct

Window vinyls in SkelmersdaleEye-catching images portraying the different elements of Skelmersdale have been used to enhance a local shopping area.

West Lancashire Borough Council has used a number of large-scale vinyl’s to decorate the windows of one of its premises at Sandy Lane Shopping Precinct to enhance the environment.

The front of the building had fallen into a state of disrepair, so as part of the office refurbishment plans for the Sandy Lane site, the Council decided to make the premises more attractive by using bright collages in the windows.

The images depict the positive features of Skelmersdale and include four key themes:

  • Commercial industry - which shows the history of coal mining together with modern day big names and companies such as the Walkers Factory.

  • Sport and leisure - to highlight the local cricket and football clubs together with the flagship Beacon Country Park, which is a recreational haven of beauty

  • Religion - Skelmersdale is home to many iconic places of worship including the famous ecumenical centre

  • Housing - There are so many different types of housing stock and the fact that Sandy Lane is where the Council’s housing division are based that it seemed fitting to include this theme!

Councillor Val Hopley, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: "This initiative has had a Window Vinyl's in Skelmersdalehuge impact on the visual environment and has really brightened up the appearance of our Sandy Lane offices. Since the vinyls have been put up in the windows they have generated a lot of interest from local residents and shoppers. The images celebrate Skelmersdale’s unique heritage and history as well as modern day cultures and have made a positive contribution to the overall attractiveness of this shopping area."

Please note that the Sandy Lane offices are not open to the public.
