Glenburn Road gateway enhancements a blooming success

A major transport entrance into West Lancashire will soon be in full bloom, thanks to environmental works led by the District Council.

Visitors and residents travelling along Glenburn Road, Skelmersdale will soon notice a colourful difference to the scenery because parts of the area have benefited from enhancement works to spruce up the appearance of this busy transport corridor from junction 4 of the M58 motorway.

The work includes extensive new landscaped areas in the central reservation of the dual carriageway, together with enhanced planting and signage on Hope Island to reinforce the Marie Curie Cancer Care artwork and daffodil planting already present on this roundabout.

A staggering 95,000 new daffodil bulbs and over 2,700 trees have been planted in the central reservations. In addition, more than 1,500 shrubs and four Marie Curie Cancer Care signs will enhance the raised centre of the roundabout.

This project is being delivered under the District Council's West Lancashire Inspire Project - funded by the North West Regional Development Agency via the West Lancashire Local Strategic Partnership's Investing in Business Regeneration Programme.

Councillor Adrian Owens, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Estates, said: "The environmental, economic and community benefits of this scheme are significant. The planting of extensive areas of trees such as oak and ash and the reinforcement of the link between Hope Island and Marie Curie Cancer Care will be a lasting legacy to the success of the Inspire project. It will make an important contribution to the regeneration of Skelmersdale and will continue to strengthen the positive image of the town."

The scheme complements other environmental improvements that have taken place to make six gateways into the district more attractive for residents, visitors and inward investors. These are:

  • The A5209 in Wrightington (adjacent to the M6 motorway)
  • The A59 in Aughton
  • The A565 in Banks
  • The A59 in Tarleton
  • The Leeds-Liverpool canal at Appley Bridge
  • Four Lane Ends, Bickerstaffe (adjacent to junction 3 of the M58 motorway)
