Remembering our war heroes
To honour the men and women who have given their lives in wars
and other conflicts, a special event will be held in Ormskirk on 11
November.
West Lancashire Borough Council has organised a two-minute
silence ceremony in the town centre on the 11th hour of the 11th
day of the 11th month to remember our war heroes.
This year, the event will be centred at the clock tower to
acknowledge those who gave their lives in World Wars I and II and
other conflicts, as well as those who have survived but carry the
mental and physical scars.
The Mayor Cllr Geoff M. Roberts will lead the ceremony. Local
clergy will then say prayers and ‘The Last Post’ will be played
before the silence.
As it is a public ceremony, all the community are encouraged to
attend in honour of the brave men and women who lost their lives
and to observe the silence.
The Mayor Cllr Geoff M. Roberts said: "The 11 November is a very
poignant time in our history, therefore I would encourage old and
young to observe the silence and remember all those brave people
who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country."
On Remembrance Sunday, 8 November, the Mayor accompanied by
Chief Executive Bill Taylor and MP Rosie Cooper will lay a wreath
at St Anne's Church in Ormskirk, starting at 9.45am, before
attending a ceremony at the Parish Church. After the Service, there
will be a salute and march past the Civic Hall to the Comrades'
Club where the Mayor will lay a wreath.
Deputy Mayor John Baldock, accompanied by Deputy Chief Executive
Les Abernethy, will lay a wreath at Skelmersdale War Memorial in
Sandy Lane at 11am.
The Parish Councils at Up Holland, Burscough, Lathom and Aughton
will be making their own arrangements for wreath laying.
