More funding for free swimming
lessons
Free swimming lessons for weak or non-swimmers have made
such a splash in West Lancashire that extra funding has been given
to extend the scheme.
West Lancashire Community Leisure Trust has been awarded
another £1,500 from the British Swimming ASA to launch a second
programme for those who meet the criteria.
To qualify, participants need to be over 12 years old and
either cannot swim at all or are very weak and need more help.
There is no upper age limited and it is hoped that specific classes
can be organised for different age groups, particularly the over
60’s, who can then take advantage of the free swimming for 60’s and
over in West Lancashire.
This second course will start in early October and lasts
for 6 weeks. It is for an hour lesson per week free of charge at
Nye Bevan Pool and Park Pool. Places are limited to the first 60
people who sign up by contacting their local swimming pool to
register.
John Bullock, Chairman of the West Lancashire Community
Leisure Trust, said: "We had such a huge response to this
initiative that we have been awarded another £1,500 to offer more
free swimming lessons. This is great for weak or non-swimmers in
West Lancashire who want to learn to swim because it’s a fun sport
and good for your health. I’m sure that we’ll have plenty of people
wanting to take advantage of this offer, so hurry and put your name
down."
The idea behind this initiative is to meet the Amateur
Swimming Association’s plan to get 100,000 more people swimming
across the country.
