New entrance
feature for Coronation Park
Work is starting next week on a brand new eye-catching entrance
feature for Ormskirk’s flagship Coronation Park.
It will be the focal point for visitors to the town’s popular
attraction, as it will visually improve the existing entrance on
the corner of Park Road (by Morrisons supermarket).
The new entrance will be formed by sculptured stone columns and
walls, with new signage and additional landscaping surrounding the
area. It will also lead people through the avenue of pretty trees
to the main bandstand, offering a picturesque view of the park.
Contractors will be on site from 21 September to start the
groundworks, while, behind the scenes workmen will be preparing the
stone carvings and railings ready to erect over the next few
weeks.
Work is expected to last between 6 to 8 weeks with an official
opening planned for November.
This latest initiative is the last stage of a 4-year improvement
plan for the park and complements the existing work that has
already happened: including a new play area for children, a new
bandstand, the employment of an Urban Ranger to look after the park
and run an events programme, lake works, new footpaths and cycle
paths together with additional landscaping.
Cllr Andrew Fowler, Portfolio Holder for Community Services,
said: "There have been lots of exciting improvements to the park
over the last few years and the park has been turned into a real
community facility that is popular with both the locals and
visitors. I’m delighted that we are now starting the final phase of
the improvement plan to install a brand new entrance feature, which
will give the park a central focal point. The park is still open
for business as usual while the work is going on, so make sure you
pay a visit."
Coronation Park is situated right in the centre of Ormskirk,
with entrances off Park Road and County Road. It is a 5-minute
stroll from both the bus and train station, and car parking is
available at Morrisons, Park Pool and Two Saints Retail Park -all
of which neighbour the park.
The park has scooped a prestigious Green
Flag award for 2009-2010. The accolade recognises the natural
beauty of the park for its welcoming, safe and maintained
environment and for its community involvement.
