Beat sweeps across Skelmersdale
Beat sweeps will be sweeping across Skelmersdale in a bid to
make the targeted areas clean, safe and green.
For the second year running, agencies including West Lancashire
District Council, the police, fire and rescue, Groundwork and
others will be getting together with the community to blitz a
number of areas.
This initiative was originally trialled in Digmoor last year and
it was so successful that a number of weeklong events will take
place in the next few months to combat anti social behaviour,
promote cleanliness and encourage community spirit.
It is also part of the Neighbourhood Management project through
the Safer Stronger Communities cash windfall of £3.7m to make
Digmoor, Moorside and parts of Tanhouse cleaner, greener and safer
over the next two years.
Rosie Cooper MP, Chair of the West Lancashire Local Strategic
Partnership, said: "Last year’s beat sweep was a fantastic example
of multi agency problem solving and working together to tackle
issues head-on. So much so that we have organised several more,
which I’m sure will be just as effective."
Clay Brow and Holland Moor will host the first one between
Monday 18 and Friday 22 August. It will also coincide with the ice
rink and community fun days at the nearby Digmoor Community Centre
on 22, 23 and 24 August.
Throughout the week there will be everything from graffiti
removal, bulb planting, targeted street sweeping, fire safety
initiatives, encouraging tenants not to cause a nuisance, dog
enforcement, motor vehicle enforcement and other activities to
encourage locals to keep the area tidy.
The next beat sweep will be at Tanhouse from Monday 22 to Friday
26 September and will coincide with the ice rink at Tanhouse
Community Centre on 25, 26 and 27 September.
Then Digmoor will have its beat sweep on Monday 27 October to
Friday 7 November to tie in with the Operation Brightsparx campaign
and the Council’s bonfire strategy.
Little Digmoor is also planning to hold one in December
sometime.
Margaret Highton, Chair of the Neighbourhood Board, said: "To
ensure that the initiative is successful we need help and support
from local people to join in with the activities and to have pride
in their area."
Cllr Paul Greenall, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety,
added: "I’m delighted that agencies are really rallying round to
and help make these areas cleaner, safer and greener place for
people to enjoy."
