This parish extends from Lydiate Brook, a few yards north of
Lydiate church, to Halsall in the north and Formby in the west. It
is a parish of highly fertile farming country drained by brooks and
ditches.
The hamlets of Downholland, Haskayne and Barton lie beside the
Southport to Liverpool road and the many herons - a long with the
Leeds and Liverpool Canal - are listed among the parish's
attractive features.
There is a thriving village school, a general store, a post
office as well as a craft shop. Downholland has a
number of public houses and a village hall which
hosts a growing number of community activities.
