Halsall extends from the hamlets of Primrose Hill
and Bangors Green near Ormskirk westwards across to Ainsdale. Much
of this western part of the parish is rich fertile farming land won
from the extensive Halsall Moss.
Halsall is situated on the Southport to Aintree road
where stands St Cuthbert's Church. Dating from 1250, it
is famed as the oldest Parish Church in England.
Halsall is where the first sod was ceremonially dug (5 November
1770, by the Hon Charles Mordaunt of Halsall Hall) for the
commencement of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. A sculpture,
Halsall Navvy by Thompson Dagnall, just across the bridge from the
Saracen's Head pub now commemorates this.
