Neighbourhood Watch is a partnership where people come together
to make their communities safer. It involves the Police, other
voluntary organisations and above all, individuals and families who
want to make their neighbourhoods better places to live.
There are over 155,000 Neighbourhood Watch schemes across the
country involving around 6 million households. All of them make a
positive contribution to crime prevention and community safety.
Why should you join Neighbourhood Watch?
The purpose of being a member of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme
ensures that you have the benefit of being part of a group of
neighbours who have made an effort in helping to prevent crime in
their area. You may also receive a reduction on your home contents
insurance.
It's free to set up a scheme, or be part of it. A Crime Prevention
Officer will assess the security of your home and suggest ways of
improving it. A local Co-ordinator is responsible for each scheme.
They ensure that the scheme runs smoothly and acts as the contact
with the Police.
How to get involved
Crime reduction and crime prevention are most successful when they
involve everybody, not just the Police. You too can be more
involved. If you want to join an existing scheme in your area - or
start a new scheme - contact Dianne Hignett, the Crime Prevention
Officer, on 01695 566353 and leave the rest to her.
Crime prevention advice for the over 60's
West Lancashire Community Safety Partnership has provided
funding towards Crime Prevention Packs for the
over 60's.
The packs contain a crime prevention leaflet specifically
aimed at older people and a handy door hanger
containing the ‘STOP, CHAIN, CHECK’ message and useful contact
numbers.
The packs will be delivered by members of the Neighbourhood
Policing Teams, Community Volunteers, Crime Prevention Officers and
Fire and Rescue officers to older and vulnerable members of the
community during crime re-visits, at PACT meetings and other
community events.
