Local Plan Preparation Stages

What is the Local Plan?

The Local Plan will guide future development within West Lancashire over the 15 year period 2012-2027.  It will supersede the Council's West Lancashire Replacement Local Plan 2001-2016.

The new Local Plan sets out:

  • The distinctive features, issues and challenges in the borough
  • A vision of how we'd like the borough to be in 15 years time
  • What we need to do to achieve this vision
  • Key policies to help meet our goals

The Local Plan should link with other plans or strategies that may affect land use, in particular the Sustainable Community Strategy (Adobe PDF format, 2.76mb). It also needs to acknowledge national and regional guidance and consider parish plans

Stages of the Local Plan

Producing the Local Plan is a priority for the Council. We expect it will take at least six years, from a start date of 2006. The process is complex and involves numerous stages.
